As the year draws to a close, the landscape of East Africa transforms. It is the season where the roads leading away from the cities are packed with families returning to their ancestral villages. At EUSMS, we believe the holidays are defined by three deep-rooted values: the family, the togetherness, and a shared passion for a better tomorrow.
The Significance of the Family

In our culture, the family is the primary engine of hope. It is the foundation where values are taught and dreams are nurtured. Whether it is gathering around a fire in the evening or sharing a massive festive meal, these moments remind us that no one succeeds alone.
The family is the ultimate source of strength in our community, and at EUSMS, it is the root of our mission. We understand that investing in a person means investing in their family. This approach ensures that the growth we build together is self-sustaining and provides a lasting legacy for the future
The Language of the Togetherness
One of the most beautiful aspects of the holidays in East Africa is how we acknowledge one another. The greetings are not just words; they are an invitation into the community. Depending on where you travel, you will hear the air filled with different sounds of celebration:
- In Kenya and Tanzania: You will hear the warm call of “Heri ya Sikukuu!” (Happy Holidays/Blessings of the Festival). It is a phrase that recognizes the “big day” and wishes happiness upon the entire household.
- In Uganda: Friends greet each other with “Sekufuluuzimansi Enungi,” a soulful way to wish a good Christmas to the family.
- In Rwanda and Burundi: The gentle “Noheli Nziza” echoes through the hills, wishing neighbors a beautiful and peaceful season.

These greetings reflect a community of changemakers who see the value in every interaction. This spirit of unity is what makes our region’s potential so unique. When we greet one another, we are acknowledging a shared journey and a mutual support system.
A Celebration for the All
The holidays are a vibrant display of community in action. From the shared preparation of festive foods like Pilau, Chapati, and Nyama Choma to the communal celebrations that bring entire villages together, there is a collective passion for seeing one another thrive.
Giving Back: Turning the Passion into the Action
“Giving back” during the holidays is an act of solidarity. If you are looking to turn the festive spirit into a lasting impact, here are a ways to do so:
- Support the Local Businesses: Choose to shop from local artisans and small business owners for your holiday needs.
- Skill-Sharing: Offer technical knowledge or business guidance to a young person in your village or neighborhood who is starting a new venture.
- Volunteering: Dedicate your time to a cause you truly care about.
- Advocacy: Share the stories of local leaders who are redefining ethical entrepreneurship. Using your voice to champion the dignity of work inspires the entire community.
As you enjoy this time with your loved ones and exchange the traditional greetings of our home, we celebrate the warmth and the unity that define us. Together, we are turning the spirit of the holidays into a lasting legacy of prosperity and hope.
If you’re interested in doing something great this holiday season, volunteer with us. At EUSMS, your time and skills help empower the local changemakers and support families across our community. Join us in turning the holiday spirit into a lasting impact: www.eusms.org/application
